Almost everything about the Nazca culture is a mystery…
The Nazca civilization prospered in the southern desert of Peru from approximately 200BC to 600AD. Among other things, this culture made designs in the desert--designs that could not be fully seen while they were being made and could only be seen from the air. The lines were not totally observed until the 1930s when aircraft flew over them.
It is thought that the initial sets of lines were geometric designs that over time became more intricate and shapes and figures emerged. Because this culture lived roughly 800 years one can see lines made over other lines, etc. Some of the straight lines extend thirty miles…Experts believed they formed the largest astronomical calendar ever created. However, like Easter Island (Rapa Nui) this culture left no written history so everything is open to speculation.
